Sunday 24 May – Norwich Community Land Trust, Angel Road

Angel Road Junior School, Angel Road, Norwich NR3 3HR

This green project focuses on a set of disused school buildings and their surroundings green spaces. The site is currently held on on a 125 yr old lease by the Great Hospital Charity of Norwich, after having being handed back to the county council by the Academy Trust which previously run the school. The site has been empty since 2022; 4 years!

During that time Norwich Community Land Trust was asked to get involved involved by local people who were concerned about what was happening or not. The initial reaction to our enquiries was not positive. “Amateurs, political rabble rousers, trouble makers.” were some comments made.

By December 2023 the site was granted the status of an “Assert of Community Value” by Norwich City Council.

This open afternoon is an opportunity to explore a project that could develop into an exciting and thriving green space. We have even inquired about possibilities for access to the green spaces to give people the chance to grow their own food.

Come and food join us for an afternoon introducing this space. Refreshments will be provided by Substrata Wines. Find out more.

Saturday 6 June – Haveringland Church

St. Peter’s Church, off Haveringland Rd, Norwich, NR10 4PW

St Peter’s Church is the oldest surviving building in Haveringland and has one of the oldest round towers in the county, dating to the 11th century. The rest of the church, including the top of the tower, is a rebuild of 1858.

The Church was originally set amongst the wooded parkland of the Haveringland Hall estate. Haveringland Hall was located about half a mile to the north east. During World War Two the hall and its estate were requisitioned and became part of RAF Swannington airfield. The trees surrounding the church were removed. One of airfield perimeter tracks ran alongside the church. Now standing isolated beside this track, St. Peter’s is known as ‘The Church in the Fields’.
